WordPress is one of the most powerful blogging scripts out there, and you might be surprised to learn how many websites use it. In fact, you could visit a website and never realize WordPress is powering it, which is due to just how customizable the script is.
Since I am a content contributor for matrimonial law firm from New York, first thing I did was to customize the WordPress script for their website. Here I will write a few tips about it, and be sure that you haven’t forgotten any detail when setting it up, consider the tips on this list.
Some Basic Settings
1.You don’t have to use your blog at your home page. In fact, WordPress’s own reading settings let you select any page from your website as the one visitors see first.I choose a static home page for my client. I tested a few versions and research for the other matrimonial attorney websites and built the final version which satisfied my client.
- Enable searching through pages with a plugin like Better Search by Ajay D’Souza or Search Everything.
Feature your best posts above your blog with a featured posts carousel. The official JetPack plugin by the WordPress developers lets you easily accomplish this.
Let your visitors know where they are and leverage the power of SEO with a breadcrumb navigation like Yoast Breadcrumbs.
Improve Your Website Load Time
If WP Minify isn’t enough, consider a caching plug-in like WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache create HTML versions of the content that visitors frequently see to reduce load on the database and speed up your site.
Pagination lets you add numbered links to other pages. It’s common on post archives, but you can do the same in your comments. If you have upwards of fifty comments, breaking them into pages greatly reduces loading and scrolling.
Comments and Interaction
Adding threaded comments once required a third-party comment source, but this is no longer the case. Enable them in your settings, and your back-and-forth conversations become easier to swallow. I implemented a “testimonials” page with comments option to encourage visitors who are looking for an attorney, to write their own opinion about my client’s website, which helped me a lot to improve the website itself and the content.
A bit of CSS lets you highlight comments from the blog author, allowing them to stand out from other comments.
You can also cleanup your comments by changing the PHP in your “comments.php” so that your blog automatically separates comments from trackbacks.
If you’re sick of spammers using your comment form for their links, consider disabling HTML in comments. A simple addition to “functions.php” will help deter those spammers.
A PHP function lets you display recent comments any place you want. We recommend the sidebar to let your readers know what’s hot.
Display thumbnails for related posts with YARP, a customizable related posts plugin like none other. WordPress Related Posts will also provide you with the same functionality.
Create a mobile version of your website if many of your visitors arrive on their tablets or phones. WordPress Mobile Pack, Simple Mobile and WPtouch Pro are tools that with help to detect mobile users and serve them content in the most efficient way.
Consider a sidebar tag cloud or drop down menu. This not only shows the topics on which you most often write, but helps to create deeplinks to a variety of content. We put the static sidebar on the left, with “contact us” form and “Areas of Practice” where main link is for “Long Island divorce blog”. That way Long Island Divorce attorneys can write about their experience, read and answer the comments to stay in touch with their visitors and potential clients.
There’s so much to do with WordPress that we can hardly cover it in a single article. So here few others.
These are the tips I implemented into a matrimonial firm website. What do you always do when you install WordPress to a new website? Please share it in the comments.
